What is Sangria?

Sangria is a wine punch that originates from Spain and Portugal. Traditionally made using red wine, there are white, rosé and sparkling wine versions. Along with wine, it typically contains:

  • fruit juices
  • sparkling water or lemonade
  • sugar
  • chopped fruits (oranges, peaches, pineapple)
  • flavoured liquors like cognac or brandy.

It’s an easy, mix-it-your-way drink that you can update with your favourite fruits and tipple.

Rich with history, Sangria’s origins can be traced to 200 BC when Romans ironed out curves in roads. Back then, with water often unsafe for drinking, it was common to mix water with wine to ward off ill-health. Households would add various fruits and spices to flavour the wine because they believed it would benefit health.

Choosing the best wine to use in Sangria

What you put into Sangria is what you get out. Best bet: avoid using any old cheap bottle of vino.

A fruity, medium-bodied wine is the best choice for a classic red wine Sangria. Any wine you enjoy drinking can be used, but avoid full-bodied, oaky, or heavily tannic wines, as they can clash with the fruit in a Sangria mix.

Grenache is one of the best wines to use for Sangria. Our RedHeads Wilson Gunn Pax Grenache blend is rich in flavour but low in acidity and tannins, meaning no bitterness, making it perfect for a Sangria. The notes of black fruit and spice are quintessential to the drink.

Our Catbird Seat Cabernet Sauvignon is another good choice for a tasty jug. Its blackcurrant jam, juicy raspberry and fresh mint notes make for a fruity concoction while hints of spice and liquorice helps balance out the addition of fresh fruit and sugar.

How to make Sangria – try our easy red Sangria recipe

What you’ll need:

  • 1 bottle of your favourite RedHeads red wine
  • 200ml of orange juice
  • 300ml of sparkling water (or lemonade)
  • 100ml of your favourite liquor, like brandy or cognac (optional)
  • 1 large orange (sliced into wedges)
  • 1 apple (sliced)
  • 1 lemon (sliced into wedges)
  • 200g of strawberries (quartered)
  • 3 tbsp of caster sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • ice cubes

Method:

  1. Into a bowl, add the chopped fruit, cinnamon (if using) and sugar, stirring to ensure everything is mixed. Cover the bowl and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour or ideally overnight.
  2. Add the ice cubes into a jug, and then add the fruit mixture, wine, brandy (if using) and orange juice before stirring and making sure the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Top off the jug with sparkling water or lemonade and serve. Voila!

How to make frozen Sangria Margarita

For those blisteringly hot summer days, a frozen Sangria Margarita quenches thirst and combines two well-loved cocktails to create a boozy slushie for grown-ups.

What you’ll need:

For the Sangria:

  • 250ml of red wine
  • juice of 1 orange
  • juice of 1 lime
  • ice cubes

For the Margarita:

  • 1 can of frozen limeade concentrate (or 300ml lime cordial)
  • 2 shots of tequila
  • ice cubes
  • salt and sugar for glass rim

Method:

  1. In a blender, add all the ingredients and blend. Place mixture in the freezer.
  2. Rinse the blender − this is important to achieve two separate tasting mixtures. After rinsing, blend all of the Margarita ingredients (apart from the sugar and salt).
  3. Mix the salt and sugar onto a plate, wet the glass rim with lime and dip it into the mix.
  4. Layer the two cocktail blends in the glass by alternating between the two. Garnish with a wedge of lime.

Serving and enjoying

For that authentic Mediterranean vibe, the presentation of Sangria is almost as important as the taste. A jug or pitcher at the table is the traditional way to enjoy the fruity drink, but a punch bowl or dispenser is handy for a larger crowd.

Choose clear jugs/bowls to showcase the deep crimson colour and the chunks of fruit. For extra showboating, garnish with funky straws and slices of fruit on the rim of large wine glasses or mason jars.

Sangria goes with most food cooked on the grill. Char-grilled steaks, burgers and veggie dishes work perfectly with the cool, fruitiness of the drink. Finger food such as crisps and dips or small tapas-style dishes, especially spicy ones, work well too. A board of goats-cheese, camembert and mature cheddar is also delicious, served with a pitcher of Sangria.

How many calories are in a glass of Sangria?

A glass of Sangria can have between 200-300 calories, as the added sugar contributes to the increase in calories.

Can Sangria go bad?

Kept in the fridge, Sangria should be drunk within three days. The addition of fresh fruit prevents the cocktail from lasting very long. To help it last longer, cover the jug in cling film in the fridge, or keep it in an airtight container.

Allowing the fruit to sit in the alcohol, soaking it up before adding the other ingredients, can help it last a little longer.

How much alcohol is in Sangria?

Sangria made with the addition of extra liquor or spirit will have a higher alcohol content than the wine itself. Any drinks labelled as Sangria in shops must contain no more than 12% alcohol.
